Daniel Maxson Mahoney

Dan Mahoney, a native Texan, wore many "hats"---devoted husband to Lindy Hill Mahoney (they adored each other), great friend to many, generous benefactor to those in need, real estate professional, involved member of civic and charitable organizations and someone who was as comfortable talking real estate with a client in Dallas as he was fishing with friends and family at his beloved Coon Creek Club or serving in his red pants as a Salesmanship Club member/volunteer at the annual Byron Nelson Golf Classic. We will miss Dan, who passed away on May 2, 2019 after a long battle with congestive heart failure.

Daniel Maxson Mahoney was born in Dallas on May 23, 1938 to Kenneth and Margaret (Peggy) Mahoney. Dan's maternal grandfather was one of the founders over a hundred years ago of the Coon Creek Club, a hunting and fishing club south of Athens, Texas, and the founder in 1915 of an insurance agency in Dallas, that continues today as Maxson, Mahoney and Turner.

Dan graduated from Hillcrest High School and Southern Methodist University with a BBA and majors in real estate, insurance and finance. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, social fraternity, at SMU. He pursued graduate studies in finance, real estate appraisal, real estate management, mortgage banking and real estate law. Dan became a licensed Texas real estate broker in 1961 but first pursued a career in residential and commercial mortgage banking business becoming a partner and principal officer of the company.

Following the sale of the mortgage company, Dan started his own residential brokerage company in Highland Park Village, Mahoney Realtors, which grew into a firm that had over sixty agents and an annual volume of sales in excess of $60 million. In 1999, Mahoney Realtors, including Dan and his wife, Lindy, joined Briggs Freeman Real Estate Brokerage.

He then founded and managed Mahoney Property Management, Inc. which specializes in luxury residential leasing and management.

Dan was a member of the Appraisal Institute since 1969 with an earned designation of Senior Residential Appraiser, a member of the Real Estate Brokerage Managers Council with an earned designation of Certified Residential Broker. He was also a member of the National Association of Residential Property Managers, the Realtor Land Institute, Employers Relocation Council and other related real estate organizations. Dan was on the Board of Directors of the Greater Dallas Association of Realtors and served as chairman or member of many of its special committees.

He served on several boards of civic and charitable organizations, including Child Care Group and The Senior Source, with a special interest in the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, sponsor of the Byron Nelson Golf Classic which Dan served in many capacities.

In his "spare time," he served as the managing partner and chairman of two privately held oil and gas companies and saw after family investments, including a family owned ranch near Aubrey, Texas.

Dan enjoyed fishing and spending time with family at his and Lindy's home at Coon Creek Club and short trips with Lindy to see children (one on each coast). Since 1960, Dan had been a member of the Club, serving with distinction as Vice President, a Board member and Chairman of the Real Estate Committee. Dan was also a member of the Dallas County Club, the Dallas Petroleum Club and the Park Cities Club.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Lindy Hill Mahoney, of Dallas; twin brother, Michael K. Mahoney and wife, Paula, of Rockport, Texas; niece, Kelly Mahoney of Dallas; nephew, Michael H. Mahoney and wife, Bonnie, and children, Gretchen, Michael W. and Mallory, of Dallas; brother-in-law, Tom Hill of rural Kenya; Lindy's children and grandchildren: Stephen Terry, and wife, Jenny, and children, Lauren and Stephen, of Mill Valley, California; Shelly Pace, and husband, Zach, and children, Natalie, Caroline and Benjamin, of Annapolis, Maryland.

The family is most grateful to Kelly Mahoney, Dan's niece, Martin Stevenson, Dan and Lindy's dear friend, and Connie Martinez for their loving care and support during Dan's illness, and extends a warm thank you to Dan's wonderful caregivers.
