Della Mae Mickens was born to the union of James and Beatrice Johnson in Benton, Louisiana, on May 3,1950. She transitioned from this life October 26, 2021. Della was the youngest of the nine children born to this union and doted on by her siblings.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Longview Baptist Church in Benton, Louisiana. Later on in life she joined More Than Conquerors Christian Center, Bishop C.E. Leach, Desoto, TX., where she served as an usher for 25 years. She was a Mother in the church who always displayed class, grace and faith in God and readily gave him the praise he deserves. She joined Ideal Family Church, Bishop Ray Campbell, Dallas, TX., in 2019 after being blessed by his radio ministry for years. She spoke highly of the ministry and loved her new church home and was continually growing in her faith.
Della met the love of her life, her faithful, loyal best friend, Refus Mickens and they wed in 1974. To this union two children were born Tracy and Shavonna (deceased). After the passing of their beloved daughter, they selflessly took on the role of guardian to their grandchild Mirikal. She was God's gift to them.
Della worked for the Dallas Independent School District for 20 years in Food Services specializing in baking. She loved baking cookies and cakes for all the gifts at T.G. Terry Elementary School. She loved to cook, exercise, and could often be found sitting in the kitchen listening to her favorite gospel station. She was the best known for her strawberry cake and collard greens.
She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shavonna; siblings, Flora Roe; Lugene Johnson; Maggie Ford and Gracie Bonaparte.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Refus; son, Tracy; granddaughter, Mirikal; siblings, Maudie Walker of Benton, LA; Judy Johnson, Bossier City, LA.; Lee Ethel Cuba (Thurman), Dallas, TX.; and a host of relatives and friends.
