She graduated high school from Forest Avenue in 1939. Gloria married Robert Conner, the love of her life, on December 6, 1941… the eve before Pearl Harbor. Robert always said he had started 2 wars, and hadn’t finished one of them yet! Gloria and Robert had 3 children: Tommy, Gee Gee, and Gracie.
Gloria worked at several jobs in her lifetime, including being a church secretary and a school secretary, but her claim to fame was being a study hall teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School, where her motto was, “Do right and live friendly.”
Robert and Gloria were instrumental in the start of Dallas Christian School where Robert was a founding board member. It had always been a dream of both of them to have a school, other than at a collegiate level, where Jesus was taught first every day, and then academics. She was particularly proud that all her children and grandchildren were able to attend Dallas Christian.
Robert died in 1979, and Gloria later married Sig Harle, from Newberg, Oregon. They enjoyed extensive travel adventures together to Mexico, Alaska, Bermuda, and all over the USA.
Gloria lived her last years at Christian Care Center, where she was cared for by kind and loving folks. She enjoyed the friendship of many there, and was an encouragement to all.
Gloria was a Christian and unabashedly witnessed to others about God and His Son, Jesus. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School lessons for many years, using a sandbox and dolls, making the Bible come alive for hundreds of young people. Gloria attended Saturn Road Church of Christ, was active in supporting Dallas Christian School, taught many women’s classes and retreats, and was well known and loved by many people.
She took pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was always proud of their accomplishments.
In her years after Robert’s death, she was known and readily recognized by the bow or flower she always wore in her hair. Gloria wore the bow to remind herself and others that God once placed the bow in the sky as a promise to Noah and all mankind that He would always remember His promises to His people. Gloria never doubted God’s promises, and is now enjoying them in Heaven.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 1, 2015 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM, and will be followed by Funeral Services at 1:30 PM at Saturn Road Church of Christ, 3030 Saturn Rd, Garland, TX 75041.
