

Gunnery Sergeant Gordon W. Murr, Sr., USMC (Retired), was born July 27, 1925 in Fort Worth, Texas and passed from this life November 19, 2014, at his home in Mesquite, TX, at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 23 days. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Austin Murr and Lila Marie Roberson, a sister, Rhea Browning, two brothers, Billy Murr, and Curtis Murr ,and two sons, David Bruce Murr and Douglas Austin Murr, Sr. and a granddaughter Christy JoAnn Tolbert. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Leta Mae Canright Murr, Daughter Diane Murr Hardy, Sons Dwight E. Murr, Sr. and wife Patty, Gordon W. Murr, Jr., Dennis J. Murr and wife Linda, Dwayne Allan Murr and wife Kate, Daryl Norman Murr and wife Margaret, and daughters-in-law Charlene Hart Murr and Janice Dixon Murr. Gordon is also survived by 20 Grandchildren, 35 Great-grandchildren and 3 Great-great grandchildren. "Gunny" Murr served his country proudly, participating in the Pacific Campaign against the Japanese during WWlI, and in the Korean War, and received a number of medals for his service. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked in restaurant management for several years. A member of what has come to be known as "The Greatest Generation", Gordon was especially proud of his time and experiences in the Marine Corps and carried them throughout the rest of his life. Gordon was a believer in Jesus Christ and a member of several Baptist churches. To his wife, a faithful and loving husband; to his children, a great provider and protector; to all who knew him, a bit of a clown and a hero in his own right. Funeral Service 7:00 pm Monday, November 24, 2014 in the chapel of Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 6 pm. Committal service with military honors 10:00 am Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery.
