Guadalupe “Lupe” Hernandez-Frayre was born March 29th, 1949 to Yndalesio and Josefa Hernandez in Ennis, TX. She was the youngest of two, with one older brother, Frank Hernandez Sr.
Lupe moved to Waxahachie, TX with her family in 1953. There she grew up, attended and graduated from Waxahachie High School. Anxiously wanting to start a career, Lupe immediately began taking classes at Rutherford Business College. After completing a year long program in 6 months, Lupe dove right in to job interviews and was offered a position with the Department of Justice. This would turn into a 36 year long career, where she earned many titles such as Secretary of the White Collar Crime Unit, Stenographer Pool Supervisor, Squad Secretary and SAC Relief Secretary… if there were other rolls, her family didn’t know of them, because “if I tell you, I’m going to have to kill you.”
In 1969 she met a handsome fella, Henry, with an impressive Afro and mustache. He eventually charmed (or annoyed) her enough into going on a date with him, and they were inseparable ever since. Together they had one son and two daughters, Christoper, Amanda and Angela. Having lost Christopher shortly after birth, Lupe was proud to have gained her son in-law, Lanny Thompson.
She was a proud grandmother (Yaya) to Addison Barreras and Loretta Thompson. She loved and adored her girls and took advantage of every opportunity to see them dance, play soccer, attend school functions and celebrate birthdays.
Lupe is survived by her husband, Henry Frayre, daughters Amanda Frayre and Angela Thompson, son-in-law Lanny Thompson, and granddaughters Addison Barreras and Loretta Thompson, all of Waxahachie; brother Frank Hernandez Sr., niece and nephews Patricia, Frank Jr and John Hernandez, and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents, son Christopher Jon Frayre, sister-in-law Francis Hernandez and many other family members.
Today, as we bid farewell to an incredible woman, let's remember her not with tears but with laughter and joy, just the way she would have wanted it.
Lupe was the rock of her family, the glue that held everyone together, the jokester and also the sweetheart.
Married for nearly half a century, she and Henry were the original #RelationshipGoals, proving that love can conquer all, especially if it's accompanied by a well-mixed Bloody Mary.
Her career with the Department of Justice was something she was silently proud of; growing up her daughters were often jokingly reprimanded for wearing any kind of FBI memorabilia because “you never know who is a terrorist” she would say. After retirement, she traded in her badge and records reports for an oven mitt and a recipe book; no one left her house without a full belly. Even after her cancer diagnosis and change in appetite, she continued to find comfort in the kitchen and continued to cook large meals for family and friends.
Lupe had a heart for helping others, and would often bring her granddaughters with her to restock food pantries in town. She’d freeze popsicles to handout to construction workers on hot, summer days. She loved donating to the Kiwanis Club of Waxahachie and supporting multiple angels from Angel Trees around the holidays. In the winter she would buy gloves and blankets to keep in her car should she come across someone who was without.
And let's not forget her musical taste— she loved her classic rock and old Texas country. But Pitbull was her spirit animal, and she never missed a chance to turn up the volume and show off her dance moves from her Zumba days.
So here's to you, dear wife, mommy and Yaya. May your legacy live on in every perfectly seasoned dish, every helping hand extended, and every Pitbull song that makes us want to get up and celebrate life. Cheers to a life well-lived and a woman well-loved.
