

James was born on April 18, 1939, in Harlingen, Texas, to Sewell and Mary Hensley. He was raised in Harlingen, where he graduated from Harlingen High School and continued his education at Pan American University. He remained in Harlingen where he lived until his marriage in 1965 to his beloved wife, Shirley.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his service, he dedicated more than 30 years to education with Edinburg C.I.S.D., where he worked as a teacher, counselor, and vocational administrator. His career reflected a lifelong commitment to helping students find direction and purpose.
He fulfilled a lifelong dream through his work in Distributive Education (DE). Beginning as a DE student, James worked full-time at Sears while completing his college degree. He went on to become a DE teacher, then a vocational counselor, later a vocational supervisor, and ultimately achieved his goal of serving as a vocational administrator. His journey was a testament to perseverance, hard work, and dedication.
In addition to his career in education, James played a major role in designing and completing a 480-unit recreational vehicle park in Edinburg, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
In his spare time, James enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, and hunting. He cherished time spent with his family and took great pride in their accomplishments.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sewell and Mary Hensley; his brothers, Wilfred, Herman, Lawrence, Bob, and Don; and his sister, Mary.
James is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Shirley Hensley; his son, Dr. Stan Hensley; his daughter-in-law, Deanna Hensley; his granddaughter, Katelyn Hensley; his grandsons, Austin Hensley and Chase Hensley; and his sisters, Janelle Meredith and Pinkie Schwarz.
James Stephen Hensley will be remembered for his dedication to education, his strong work ethic, and the love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched throughout his career and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
