James “Richard” McCoy passed away peacefully Sunday, March 7th, in his Lakewood home. Surrounded by his family, with Willie Nelson tunes drifting in the air, Rich had one last dance with his bride before leaving for Cowboy Heaven. Richard was rich: wealthy in life experiences, family, friends and love.
A born and bred Texan, Richard served his country in the US Army Infantry and served his communities as police officer and sheriff of both Los Angeles, California, and Craig, Colorado. It was when he moved to Dallas that he finally met the love of his life, gaining another family who fully embraced him.
He was also a beacon in his community, volunteering with the USO, the Dallas Arboretum, First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, as well as a handyman and BBQ legend to his neighbors. His warmth for his friends and family might best be summed up by the Willie Nelson lyric, “but most of all I love you ‘cause you’re you”.
A truly loving and caring man, James Richard McCoy is survived by wife Betsy, sons Timothy and James, stepsons Jon and Jeff, siblings Jolynne and Butch, ten grandchildren, and 7 great-grands. He was awesome!
