Jimmy, as he was known to his friends and family, lived a full life that took him from Bastrop to New Orleans (Tulane University) to Austin (University of Texas School of Law) to Washington, D.C. (Treasury Department) and eventually to Dallas where he settled with the love of his life, Carolyn Jaffe Schendle a fourth generation Dallasite who predeceased him on July 9, 2021. They eventually settled in the Park Cities and raised three boys, Jason, Matthew and Andrew. Family was everything to Jimmy. That extended to his siblings: Bobby (Kathy) and H.I. (Susan) Schendle and Janet (Jay) Finegold as well as their numerous cousins growing up in Bastrop: Jeff Seligman; Kay Katz; Nanette Cohen; Elaine Kuhn; Craig Seligman; Alan Raphael as well as David and Doug Cohn in Baton Rouge and all of their respective spouses and children.
He never hesitated to join any family at any place any time. He always knew everything that was going on with everyone in the family putting his superhuman memory to work recalling everyone's birthdays and anniversaries and was happy to report it to whoever asked and even if they didn't. However, the center of his world was always Carolyn and his three boys whose YMCA teams he enthusiastically coached. Their close friends were family to him and he always wanted to know what was going on with everyone.
He was a long time real estate attorney whose advice and counsel was sought by many near and far and even years after he retired. He was an avid runner and tennis player for years and never took a day off which eventually led to a few knee replacements and a transition to bike riding. Until the day he died he could be spotted ferociously pedaling the streets of Dallas even in the brutal Texas summer heat. He was also an avid snow skier who taught each of his sons to do so on their annual trips to Crested Butte, Colorado when the boys were growing up. He was a voracious reader of various newspapers (both print and online) and religiously did the New York Times Crossword Puzzles daily and would happily watch any televised sport. He was a passionate fan of the LSU Tigers, Texas Longhorns, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Commanders and anyone who happened to be playing the Dallas Cowboys.
In addition to his sons, he is survived by three daughters in law that he worshipped; Tabitha Edgens (Jason), Jean (Matthew) and Erin (Andrew) Schendle, as well as 9 grandchildren, all of whom became the center of his life and who he bombarded friends and family with pictures of; Cooper, Lily and Margot (Matthew and Jean), Miles and Mason (Andrew and Erin) and Eloise, Adelaide, Evangeline and Stella (Jason and Tabitha).
The Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Temple Emanu-El, Olan Sanctuary.
