John Patrick Couvillon, our beloved dad, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 28, 2024, at the age of 87. Pat was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on September 4, 1937 to Dudley Joseph Couvillon and Lucille Jeanne Landry Couvillon, the sixth of eleven children, in a home that was never short on love and laughter.
Pat’s early schooling took place at St. Anthony’s parochial school, where he also served as a parish altar boy. After graduating from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Pat attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where he graduated in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
On September 2, 1961, Pat married Viola Anna Blouin, also of Baton Rouge. The couple had five children together, who were also all born in Baton Rouge.
After graduating from LSU, Pat served in the Army reserves, with a brief time on active duty during the time of the Cuban missile crisis. During this time, he also worked in retail at D.H. Holmes, a Baton Rouge department store.
In 1962, Pat began his career at IBM in an entry level administrative position and remained there for 29 years until he retired in 1991 as the Southwest Regional Technical Skills Manager at the age of 59. In support of his career the family relocated from Baton Rouge to San Antonio in 1973 and again to Dallas in 1976.
Pat moved to Richardson in 1985 and was an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. After retiring, he served as a volunteer hospital chaplain and also ministered to residents in nearby assisted living communities. He attributed his legacy of faith largely to his mother and grandmother and leaves that same legacy and love of Jesus to continue in his children and grandchildren.
Instead of reading books to his grandchildren, Grandpa or PaPa Couvi practiced the old fashioned art of story-telling. Upon visits to his house, the grandchildren would eagerly gather around to hear of the main character’s latest adventures, enjoy Easter egg hunts, Christmas tree decorating and pizza parties. He also enjoyed taking care of and spoiling his granddog, Bonnie.
Pat was a devoted sports fan, with college football season being his favorite time of year. He continued cheering on his beloved LSU Tigers even in the last weeks of his earthly life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dudley Joseph and Lucille Jeanne Landry Couvillon, and siblings: Dudley Joseph Couvillon, Jr., Maybelle Couvillon Navarre, David Francis Couvillon, and Thomas Michael Couvillon.
He is survived by his son, Craig Michael Couvillon, four daughters: Catherine Couvillon Whitaker, Christine Couvillon Quinn, Celene Couvillon Tortorano, and Claire Couvillon Pearson; and sons-in-law: Dane Whitaker, Gary Quinn, Vince Tortorano, and Patrick Pearson.
Pat was blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, who also survive him; grandsons: Sean, Matthew, and Justin Whitaker, Nathan and Michael Quinn, Tyler Tortorano, and Dylan Pearson; granddaughters: Amanda Tortorano Johnson and Brooke Pearson; grandson-in-law, Colby Johnson, granddaughters-in-law: Susan Whitaker, Elizabeth Quinn, and Rebekah Quinn; and great grandchildren: Luke, Asher, Ethan, Arielle, Ezekiel, and Eliana Whitaker and Elijah, Emerie and Elliot Quinn.
He is also survived by six siblings, Harold Couvillon, James Couvillon, Lawrence Couvillon, Margaret Couvillon Bell, Louis Couvillon, and Carole Couvillon Ackman, together with their spouses: Audrey Couvillon, Janet Couvillon, and Ronald Ackman.
A visitation for Pat will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Calvary Hill Main Mausoleum North Chapel, 3235 Lombardy Ln, Dallas, Texas 75220. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 AM. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00 AM with Rev. Michael Forge officiating.
Following a Mass of Christian Burial, Pat’s body will be interred at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Reception to follow.
