Born in Dallas on November 6, 1926, to Reavis Trafton and Helen Weinheimer DuBose, John was a man defined by service, intellect, and close connections. A 1944 graduate of Sunset High School, he answered the call of duty early, serving two years in the Merchant Marines during WWII. After earning his business degree from North Texas State in 1950, he returned to uniform to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1961, John married his sweetheart, Susan Lee Wheat, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned decades. Professionally, he dedicated 26 years to sales at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Retirement took him and his family to Talihina, Oklahoma, where he was active in his church and for several years served as a Red Cross disaster relief volunteer.
John was a true lifelong learner—a devout student of history, an avid reader, writer, and a lover of jazz and classical music. John saw travel as a great adventure and he traveled the world while in the service and later with his family. He maintained a legendary passion for exercise that carried him through his 99th birthday. He deeply cherished his roots, frequently visiting relatives in Fredericksburg and staying close with his childhood "Hollywood gang" from Oak Cliff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dr. Robert T. DuBose, brother-in law John Wheat, sister-in-law Hazel DuBose, cousins, and close friends. John leaves behind a rich legacy through his beloved wife, Susan; his children, Lisa (Kathy), Mark (Brittan), and Madeline (Darrin); his grandchildren, Ethan, Henry, and Isabel; and a large circle of nieces and nephews.
The family of John wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Methodist Richardson Hospital, Garnet Hill Rehabilitation and Skilled Care, Enhabit Home Health, and the staff and residents at Lynridge Assisted Living.
