John was born on October 30, 1966 to Carl and Marjorie Nicholas at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX.
In many people’s minds, the answer to the most difficult problems was just two words - John Nicholas. He had an insight into the larger pattern of technical issues, and could hatch solutions in a few minutes to issues that vexed others for months. He was proud of the work he did at Ackerman/McQueen and of his title of Chief Technical Officer.
His problem solving acumen was really just an extension of his lifelong curiosity - a curiosity that drove him to research and master things he didn’t grasp intuitively, such as music, technology, anything that caught his interest. He was an avid reader and a talented guitar player with an ear for the classics. John was amazed and gratified to see his daughters share those passions and his drive to understand the world around him; his devotion to them is a tribute to the depth of his heart and soul. He was quiet by nature, unless the subject happened to be books or computers.
Mostly, though, John was thankful for his life, his family, his talents and his time with all of us. During his two year battle with cancer, John never complained or felt sorry for himself. He accepted the treatments with grace, and from the moment of his diagnosis was determined to be strong and to live his life joyfully, with humility and without regrets.
He drew strength from his wife Anita who attended every treatment with him. He said he felt bad for others he saw braving it alone, but, in his own words, “not one time have I ever had to go to chemo alone. Anita always plans a movie, a time to visit, always something to make it easier…and she is always there with me. I’ve never had to go through any of this alone, and I am so thankful for that!” His bravery and loyalty will always be an inspiration to his friends and family, and he will be deeply missed by those that had the privilege to know him.
John is survived by his beloved wife Anita, his children Victoria and Morgan, his parents Carl and Marjorie, and his siblings Holly, Amy, and Matt.
