Johnny attended Pemberton High School in Marshall, Texas and later was deployed to serve his country in the United States Air Force in 1964. He actively served in the armed forces for 4 years and 2 years in the reserve.
Upon his return from the military, Johnny studied and matriculated from Texas Southern University with a bachelors degree and later with a law degree. He started his own law practice, Johnny Getum, Attorney at Law of Dallas.
Johnny was preceded in death by both of his parents; Odell and Luella Getum and other relatives. He leaves to cherish his memories his brothers; Earl Getum and LaDell (Joyce) Getum; his nephews Jason Getum and David Getum; five nieces: Estell Cunigan, Dearing Howard, Monique Howard, Janae Baker, and Deja LeFall and host of other relatives and friends.
