Josefina “Chefi” Borrego, 90, was born March 15, 1936, in El Paso, Texas, and passed away April 8, 2026. After this introduction, she will be lovingly remembered as Chefi—a devoted, faithful, beloved, selfless, loyal, and wise woman whose life was anchored in faith and family. Chefi resided in Dallas, Texas.
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Chefi was 1 of 10 children to Eulalia and Romulo Jaime. Her roots and upbringing shaped the steadfast and courageous spirit that carried her through life with traditional Catholic values and a strong will.
Chefi was preceded in death by her husband, Eliseo Borrego, and her son, Eliseo “JR” Borrego (deceased) (spouse Elsa). She is survived by her children: Guadalupe Gonzalez; Eduardo Borrego (Alicia); Arturo Borrego (Mary Lou); Mary Elizabeth Borrego (Robert Quinn); Romulo Borrego (Lydia); and Mary Angelica Borrego (Adam Martinez). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.
A loving caretaker, Chefi helped to raise many generations of the family. To many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was like a 2nd mother. Faith and family were first in her life, and she was known as a very spiritual, loving mother whose presence brought strength and comfort to those around her.
Chefi was a devout Catholic and maintained a deep connection to the Catholic Diocese of El Paso. Her faith was not only personal, but also a guiding light that shaped her legacy and the way she loved, served, and persevered.
Chefi also found joy in everyday life—especially in attending her children and grandchildren’s activities. She was a proud sports fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Notre Dame football, and USA national teams and athletes. She enjoyed cooking, baking, bingo, and poker, and she brought people together through the warmth of her table and the steadiness of her companionship.
