Joseph was born in Corbin, Kentucky on September 3, 1931, to Herbert Roy Mynk and Mary Jane Moses Mynk. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school before he chose to join the Army. During his service, his skills in mathematics were recognized, resulting in a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He was the first in his family to graduate from college. Joseph was married to JoAnn Mynk on August 16, 1956; they were married for 69 years.
Upon graduation, Joe and JoAnn moved to Dallas, Texas, where they began to build their life together. His work at Texas instruments included developing radars and other projects for the Department of Defense. Following his retirement from TI, he joined the team at the Superconducting Super Collider and supported their mission of building the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. He shared his passion for all things electric with his children, and their home was filled with small wired projects and constant tinkering. His love for his home state of Kentucky was unwavering. It showed in his cooking, his travels, and his storytelling. He was dedicated to his marriage, supporting his wife through her years-long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Joseph is preceded in death by his eight siblings, son James Edward Mynk, and wife JoAnn Mynk.
Joseph is survived by his children, John, Margaret, and Elizabeth, and his grandchildren, Sarah and Katherine.
