Marty was born July 17, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Ohio State University, Marty and his wife, Sherrie Sonkin Matyas (married for 62 years), moved to Phoenix, Arizona and then eventually moved to Dallas, Texas, which became their home for over 50 years.
Of utmost importance to Marty was his family. In addition to being survived by his wife, Sherrie, he is survived by his two sons and their families: Michael Matyas married to Judy Baker Matyas (along with their children Rebecca Matyas Garbose (married to Jonathan Garbose) and Daniel Matyas) and David Matyas married to Jaime Berman Matyas (and with their children Daphne Matyas and Mackenzie Matyas). Marty is also survived by a long list of relatives (by birth and through marriage) including cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces.
In the early 1970s, after almost a decade working as a Certified Public Accountant, Marty transitioned to becoming a land developer focused on the development of Flower Mound New Town. Upon retirement, Marty devoted much of his time to driving Meals on Wheels and volunteering for North Dallas Shared Ministries, an interfaith community providing assistance to persons in need.
For those wishing to honor his memory, donations can be made to: (1) North Dallas Shared Ministries (2) Temple Emanu-El in Dallas, Texas; or (3) any charity of one’s choosing.
