Mary Jane Chambers Honea, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2015 with family and friends at her side. She was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on April 13, 1916. Her parents were James Floyd Chambers and Elizabeth Troutman Chambers of Dallas, Texas. She grew up attending Highland Park schools from Bradfield Elementary School to graduating Highland Park High School in 1934. She served as president of her freshman class and as head cheerleader. She was, also, president of her high school sorority, Theta Sigma Chi, her senior year. She started a proud tradition for some of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to become Highland Park Scots. She, then, attended SMU and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Fred Honea, Jr. in 1937, who she had known since grade school. Prior to World War II, Fred served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and then following the entry of the U.S. into the war, he served in the U.S. Army. They had three children, Fred Honea, III, Michael Honea, and Joie Elizabeth Honea Henderson. Mary Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Fred, and her brother James Floyd Chambers, Jr., past president and publisher of the Dallas Times Herald. Mary Jane enjoyed playing bridge and Mah Jong, was a member of the Triad Book Club, charter member of the Dallas Comus Dance Club, the Junior League of Dallas, the Dallas Woman's Club, and was a long time member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. She is survived by eleven grandchildren. Fred's family includes Peggy Honea, Louise Honea Beasley, Elizabeth Honea Kinnison, and Tracey Honea Davis. Michael's family includes Kristin Honea Curfman, Joel Honea, Brian Honea, and Sean Honea. Joie's family includes Honea Henderson Rothermel, Sissy Henderson, and Holly Henderson. Mary Jane is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many friends. The family wishes to thank Chris Rogers for her devotion and weekly visits to see Mary Jane. The family is deeply indebted to the staff and caregivers at the Plaza at Edgemere and the staff of Hospice Plus for their care of and kindness to our mother.
