He grew up in Johannesburg where he attended Medical School at the University of the Witwatersrand. He married his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Frances Raissen upon his graduation while she was still a medical student. Jack remained in general practice in Pretoria before specializing in Radiology in London, England, immediately following World War II. He returned to South Africa and became a faculty member of the medical school in Johannesburg for several years before starting his private practice in radiology. He was a pioneer in Cardiac Radiology in South Africa.

While he held this position he became interested in the new specialty of nuclear medicine, in which he became self-taught and then board certified. He finished his career at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital in the Nuclear Medicine department.
Jack and Sylvia loved to travel and saw the world throughout their married life. Jack also loved classical music and opera and found New York invigorating in this regard. He also loved woodworking and photography. Jack was building his own computers while well into his 80's.
Jack loved and was loved by his extended family. He never failed to travel to be with family for important events until well into his 90's. He cared for and was active in both political and social issues throughout his life.

He will be terribly missed by his son and daughter in law, Dr. Steven and Ann Meyer, his grandchildren, Susan and Saul Meyer, and his great grandchildren Max and Alex Meyer as well as his grand-daughter-in-law Adriana Meyer.
