Nancy Ellen Holmes

Nancy Ellen Ledbetter (Kindle) Holmes, born in Dallas, Texas ( Highland Park) on February 16, 1937 and departed this life on December 26, 2014. Her maternal family has been in Texas since before it was a Republic. Her parents were Marguerite Tomlinson and Roy C. Ledbetter. Mr. Ledbetter was a former President of the Dallas Bar Association.

Nancy graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1955 and the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. Nancy was nominated for Freshman Beauty, and Outstanding Senior of the Curtain Club of U.T.

After graduation she married John Madison Kindle, Jr. of Highland Park who was also a graduate of the University of Texas. He passed due to cancer in 1963.

Nancy then was married to Jerry Lee Holmes on October 23, 1965, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church of which they were both members. She aided Jerry in his many Charitable and Performing Arts organizations. Both received a bronze plaque for Outstanding and Devoted Efforts for Dallas Academy, of which Jerry was President of the Board.

Nancy suffered from an embolism in 1964 which left her with a paralyzed right arm and crippled right foot for the rest of her life. But in spite of this she was able to live a very full and enjoyable life.

She was a member of Mary K. Craig Class, the Lakeside Browning Club, Southern Memorial Association, Descendants of the Battle of San Jacinto, the Charles S. Taylor Chapter of the Republic of Texas, and the Prudence Alexander Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Nancy was also a member of the Women’s Board of the Dallas Civic Opera, of which her husband Jerry was a member and President of the Board of Directors in 1973. Jerry was also President of the Dallas Civic Ballet Board of Directors and he raised the private sector funds for the restoration of the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas.
