Randy Matthews will always be known as having been a man of unquestionable integrity and honor, a loyal, generous friend who possessed a dry, witty sense of humor. He was a true animal lover (and advocate for animal rights and care) with a special affection for West Highland Terriers and basically any member of the canine community. Most of all he was a very loving, devoted husband to his wife Terrie for forty-five years of marriage.
He was born to Doris and Carl Matthews, January 30, 1947, and lovingly raised by them in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He demonstrated an interest in learning the game of tennis as soon as he was able to hold and swing a racquet. With his parents support and encouragement, he pursued this sport throughout his youth (and adulthood), sharpening his skills with each of the numerous tournaments he played locally and regionally.
His college of choice was Southern Methodist University, where he enjoyed a well-balanced academic, athletic and social life; he lettered in tennis as a varsity team player. While at SMU, he developed lifelong friendships through his participation in a variety of campus activities and through his FIGI brotherhood.
Following college, he continued his education at Dedman School of Law, from which he graduated with the academic distinction, Order of the Coif.
In fulfilling his ROTC commitment to the U.S. Air Force, he served four years as an Air Force JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer with tours of duty in Colorado, the Republic of Korea, and lastly, Arizona.
Upon returning to Texas, he joined a prominent Dallas-based law firm, where he rose to the position of partner/shareholder. He worked representing financial institutions and borrowing entities in all types of business transactions in the financial services arena for thirty-six years. After his thirty-six year tenure at the firm, he considered himself to be semi-retired, but maintained an Of Council status with a North Dallas law firm.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, State Bar of Texas, Texas Association of Bank Council and State Bar of Texas Business Section Legal Opinion Committee.
Randy died August 11, 2021, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. The effects of P.D. altered the pace at which he enjoyed pursuing life and eliminated his ability to play tennis, his favorite activity. One of the more heartbreaking aspects of dealing with P.D. was coping with people's assumptions and misconceptions about it. He faced every challenge P.D. presented to him with dignity, grace and absolutely no complaints at all. He will be dearly missed by relatives, many lifelong friends, colleagues and clients. He is and will be profoundly missed by his wife and furry, little canine kids, wonderful Westies.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Randy's honor to Operation Kindness, 3201 Earhart Dr., Carrollton, Texas, 75006 or to Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society, 6310 LBJ Fwy., #213, Dallas, Texas, 75240.
A memorial visitation for Randy will be held Tuesday, September 28, 2021, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX, 75225.
