Born July 7, 1930 in Dallas to the late Oliver C. and Patricia Hudson Anderson, Sally was an only child but considered her cousin, Julie Ann Hudson O’Connell, and best friend, Carolynn Lightfoot Rodgers, her “sisters”. A third generation Dallasite, she never understood why anyone would ever want to move away.
After graduating from Highland Park Schools in 1947, she attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia, and graduated from SMU where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Sally married Carlisle Blalock in 1952 and was his loving companion until his death in 1978. In 1981 she married Peter Bernays, who preceded her in death in 2012. She considered herself blessed to be surrounded by a loving family: her four daughters, Sally Blalock Seidel, Patti Blalock Tinnin LeFevre (Byron), Carol Blalock Arnold (Stephen) and Lyle Blalock Beatty (Croom V); 13 grandchildren, Emily Seidel, Anthony, Stephen, Robert and Jacob Tinnin, Whitney, Stephen Jr., Anna and Lyle Arnold, Croom VI, Alex, William and Claire Beatty and six great grandchildren, with another Arnold due in July.
Sally treasured staying at home and being involved in the lives of her girls and their friends, to whom she was “Mrs. B”. Another passion was helping many others as a Latin and Math tutor. To this day former students say they would not have graduated without “Mrs. B”. In 1972 she returned to SMU earning another degree in Accounting, became a CPA and enjoyed many gratifying years in her second career with a Big Eight firm.
The girls are forever grateful for the devoted caregivers who provided loving, compassionate service to our mother: Lindy, Teresa, Paula, Emma, Linda and Rita, as well as her fabulous hospice nurse Tonya. Sally died peacefully on Carlisle’s birthday, January 24, 2014, after a courageous seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s.
A graveside service will be this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service held at Highland Park Presbyterian’s Wynne Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Her grandsons will honor her by serving as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Dallas Alzheimer’s Association.
