Nov. 6, 1949–Jan. 24, 2026
Shirley F. Strauss, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and devoted member of the Jewish community, passed away Jan. 24, 2026, surrounded by love. She was the cherished wife of Larry Strauss, with whom she shared more than 54 years of marriage built on partnership, devotion and shared purpose.
Shirley was born Nov. 6, 1949, and raised in Duncan, Oklahoma, the daughter of Max and Henia Schiff. Although there were very few Jews in Duncan, her parents were unwavering in their commitment to Jewish life. Every week, they drove Shirley more than 90 miles to the synagogue in Oklahoma City so she could attend Sunday school. That dedication made a lasting impression and helped shape her strong Jewish identity from an early age.
Shirley attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where she was a senior when her life took a pivotal turn. Larry met her uncle while working at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City and was given Shirley’s telephone number. At the time, Shirley was completing her studies in Norman. Six months after that first call, Shirley and Larry wed, beginning a marriage that would span more than five decades.
Together, Shirley and Larry built a life defined by teamwork and shared dreams. Shirley partnered fully with Larry in building both their family and their business. They founded Power Temps from the ground up and, after eight years, sold the company. They truly lived as a team. They did almost everything together, from traveling to daily activities, including their regular walks, which became a cherished routine. Their partnership was marked by closeness, loyalty and deep mutual respect.
Judaism was central to Shirley’s life. She was a tireless and gifted fundraiser, known as a master phone solicitor who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for nonprofit organizations, most notably the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. In recognition of her extraordinary dedication and impact, she was honored by the Federation, including being awarded a special trip to Europe and the Soviet Union.
Shirley took tremendous pride in her family. She was the devoted mother of three sons, who brought her great pride, happiness and love. She was also the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, each of whom she adored.
Shirley is survived by her husband Larry Strauss; her sons Rabbi Brian Strauss and his wife Lisa, Brad Strauss and his wife Shanda, and Brandon Strauss and his wife Jessica; her grandchildren Joshua Strauss, Noa Strauss, Ari Strauss, Jessica Strauss, Shayna Strauss, Jordan Strauss, Gabe Strauss, Makaela Strauss, Sloan Strauss and Pierce Strauss; her sister Sandy Ostrosky and her husband Neil; her brother Steve Schiff and his wife Ann; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Sparkman Hillcrest. Donations may be made to Congregation Beth Torah, Richardson, or the charity of your choice.
Shirley F. Strauss will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, devotion to Jewish life and the deep love she gave to her family. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the community she strengthened and the family she cherished.
