Our dearest mother, Sofia G. Benavides passed into glory on Monday, August 19th, 2024. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her the most, offering support, encouragement, wisdom, and love in abundance.
She was born September 28, 1931 in Lancaster, Texas to Arcadio and Juanita Gamez. She attended Benito Juarez school in West Dallas.
Sofia enjoyed playing softball and was an excellent catcher for her team. She not only loved playing sports but she loved watching them too as she was a fanatical Cowboy fan. She also excelled and enjoyed roller skating to the 50’s tunes and dreamt of being a professional ice skater. Sofia loved to dance! It was one of her favorite activities. While at a dance in 1959 she met her husband, Charlie Benavides. They were married in 1961 for 61 years. Together they raised a blended family, composed of eldest siblings, Rosa and Dino, as well as their four daughters Carolyn, Angela, Suzanne and Virginia.
Sofia was truly a living example of love and hospitality, and she never knew a stranger. She cared for her family so thoughtfully, taking care of her disabled sister, Lupita, for years in a nursing home. Sofia would also volunteer at St. Patrick's school, helping prepare food for the kids and serving them. She had a warmth about her and welcomed all, always willing to help in any way she could.
Sofia served in the Richardson Independent School District for over 20 years in Nutrition at Merriman Park Elementary School. She also translated for doctors and administrators at the school.
Sofia was a member at St. Patrick's Parish for over 40 years. She was a member of the Charismatic prayer group where she blossomed in her faith. She was a passionate student of the bible and faithfully attended bible study and church. One admirable quality seen by all was her unwavering faith in God. She was a true picture of living for Christ and being a wonderful servant of our Savior. She was a prayer warrior and was so generous to pray for everyone she came in contact with.
In her golden years, she resided at Golden Acres where she was a beloved resident. Her doctors, therapists and nurses were very fond of her and loved to hear her infectious laugh. She loved to laugh and have fun, especially when she won at Bingo. Everyone there always commented about her joyful spirit. The joy of the Lord was truly her strength.
Sofia was one of a kind and her life was a true blessing from God. She will be incredibly missed and will live in our hearts forever!
Sofia was predeceased by her late husband Charlie Benavides and her son, Dino Gamez; her mother and father, brothers Ernest Gamez, Felipe Gamez, and Frank Gamez; and sisters Lupita Gamez and Frances “Kika” Diaz.
Sofia is survived by her daughters, Rosa Ramirez and her husband Domingo; Carolyn Castillo and her husband Richard; Angela Griffin and her husband Warren; Suzanne Benavides Sutherland; and Virginia Crosby and her husband Shane. She is also survived by her cherished granddaughters and grandsons, many wonderful nieces and nephews, beloved great grandchildren and precious great great grandchildren.
