The eldest of three children, Steve often displayed the natural confidence and determination of a firstborn, preferring to do things his own way. From an early age, he was deeply curious about how the world worked, delighting in taking things apart to understand their inner workings and approaching the subjects that interested him with a meticulous, detail oriented focus.
In 1974, Steve began his career with Texaco as a gauger. Through dedication and skill, he advanced to the role of Automation Technician, where he developed programming software that controlled the opening and closing of valves along the oil pipeline system. Over the years, the company underwent several transitions—from Texaco to Motiva Enterprises, then Equilon Enterprises, and ultimately Shell—yet Steve’s steady professionalism and careful attention to detail remained a constant. A protector and provider by nature, he brought the same reliability to his work that he brought to those who depended on him.
Steve met the love of his life, Evelyn Britnell, while they were in high school. On October 7, 1972, they were married at First Baptist Church of Bridge City, beginning a devoted partnership that would span decades. Together they raised three children—Stephen, Adam, and Heather—building a home centered on love, encouragement, and shared interests.
A lifelong outdoorsman, Steve found great joy in camping and exploring nature. He and Evelyn were fortunate to visit many state and national parks throughout the country, creating lasting memories along the way. Among their destinations were the beautiful landscapes of Wyoming, Colorado, and Indiana, where they enjoyed the quiet beauty and adventure the outdoors provided.
Steve will be remembered for his remarkable love of learning. Whenever a new interest captured his attention, he pursued it with such enthusiasm and focus that it often bordered obsession. One example was his determination to master cooking in a Dutch oven over an open campfire while camping. Family and friends happily served as taste testers for countless batches of apple crisps until he perfected his recipe—an enduring reflection of his meticulous, detail oriented spirit and his quiet delight in doing things well.
The Simmons family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who provided compassionate care to Steven at UT Southwestern Medical Center, with special appreciation for his kidney transplant team. Their skills, kindness, and commitment meant a great deal to Steve and his family.
