Sydney R. Sherman celebrated every one of his 100+ years, constantly recreating himself as he went along: putting himself through and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School by selling newspapers and then ladies’ shoes; graduating from the New York Institute of Finance; working as an accountant for fruit and produce wholesaler W.J. Westcott & Co., later becoming owner; serving in WWII as a chief warrant officer with the U.S. Coast Guard and as Commander in the U.S. Navy (earning a Presidential Citation, the National Achievements Award, for his work with the Selective Service); working in stocks and bonds with Butcher & Singer; conservatively stewarding the Cheltenham Township Police Pension Fund and state police pension fund and serving a number of civic and charitable organizations; cheating at golf, backgammon and poker; becoming a self-taught musician playing the accordion, classical guitar and organ; and at age 97, beginning a prodigious career in painting and earning a Dallas Museum of Fine Arts award. He went out on a philosophical note: “You come in and you go out.” But above all, his ultimate quote and life meaning: “I LOVE MY WHOLE FAMILY AND THAT IS THE MAIN THING I LIVE FOR.” Sydney was born May 27, 1911, in Philadelphia, PA to Russian immigrants Sallie and Frank Sherman. He passed away September 29, 2011. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Levyn Sherman. Syd was at her side in every respect for 72 years.
