Tina was born in Wheatland, Texas on August 21, 1927, to Tina Lee Graham Layton and Wiley Fred Layton, Sr. She graduated from Denton High School and earned a BS in Advertising Design from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman’s University, in 1948.
Tina worked as an illustrator at Whaley Studio in Dallas, where she met fellow staff artist Jim Fiegenschue. They were reading the same book, Ideas Have Consequences, and a conversation about this led to a wedding on June 28, 1952. Following a honeymoon in New Orleans, Jim’s hometown, the couple settled in East Dallas and moved to Casa Linda in 1961. They attended St. Bernard Catholic Church and raised four children.
Then Tina brushed up her illustration skills and freelanced for several years, producing drawings of jewelry, shoes and accessories for retail advertising. Tina and Jim were members of the Dallas Illustrators Club, and she enjoyed gardening, thrifting, classic movies and current events. She was also involved in Catholics United for the Faith and Sacred Heart Bookstore, and lovingly cared for her two sisters in their later years. Tina and Jim were happily married for 62 years.
Tina is preceded in death by her husband Jim, sisters Mary LaRue Layton DeViney and Norma Dee Layton Lakey, and brother Wiley Fred Layton, Jr.
Tina is survived by children James Paul Fiegenschue (Meg), David Lee Fiegenschue (Kathy), Mary Ann Fiegenschue Counts (Richard), and Rebecca Ruth Fiegenschue Richter (Dale); 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and nephews Don DeViney and Lon Layton.
Memorial donations may be made in her honor to Birth Choice, 8610 Greenville Avenue, Suite 200, Dallas, Texas 75243, birthchoicedallas.org.
