Wanda Johnson Mason, was born July 28, 1927 in Abilene, Tx., to R.T. and Nell Johnson, and passed away January 5, 2012, in Dallas. Wanda and C.B. Mason were married May 28, 1948 and had 3 sons and 2 daughters. She is preceded in death by her husband C.B. Mason, son Cobie “Sonny” Mason Jr., brother Wayne Johnson, and sister Naoma Lewis. She is survived by sons Marcus Mason and his wife Anna of Utah and Lance Mason and his wife Andrea of Garland, Tx.; daughters Leslye Mason of Dallas and Anne Spence and her husband Kevin of Winnsboro; grandsons Mason and Marcus Spence of Winnsboro; granddaughter Shelley Austin of Port Arthur, Tx.; brother Wendell Johnson and his wife Norma of Yantis; several nieces and nephews plus numerous additional family. Wanda attended East Texas State Teachers College where she received a teaching certificate. She taught high school in Rocksprings, Tx. Wanda met her husband, C.B., on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. They went to the Kerrville County Fair and Wanda claims C.B. never even kissed her during their ferris wheel ride that day. After a brief whirlwind courtship they married in Quitman, Tx. Shortly thereafter, they hit the road pulling behind a small house trailer. In 1952 they settled in Longview, Tx. Mrs. Mason was an active member of the Gregg County Homemakers Association. She was an active supporter of local and state politics, the Boys Club of America and the P.T.A. She and her husband enjoyed the company of many good friends, along with camping and fishing. They traveled overseas in 1976 and lived in Iran while C.B. worked with Sedco International. In 1981 they moved to Winnsboro, Tx. and retired to Yantis, Tx. in 1990, where Wanda enjoyed membership and many friendships with the Busy Bee’s Quilters Club. Wanda was a devoted family member caring for her parents in their declining years; her brother Wayne, in his last battle with illness and death and later her husband through years of illness and disabilities until his death in 2009. She always provided a safe and comfortable haven for family and friends along with some fine home cooking and her popular ‘flaky crust- melt-in-your-mouth’ homemade pies. She was truly the epitome of a ‘Norman Rockwell’ homemaker: a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Wanda will be missed by many, but take comfort in knowing she has moved on to take her place with our heavenly father above. Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Yantis Cemetery in Yantis, TX.
