On October 24 2024, we said goodbye to Don Cleary Jr., a devoted husband to Carol and a man who wore many hats: son, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and community staple. Known for his warmth, humor, and steady presence, Don brought compassion and resilience to every role he took on, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Don was born to Don Sr. and Peg Cleary and was a caring brother to Brian. The two shared countless memories over the years, including a recent dinner that the family will always hold close. Don also extended his family circle to include his siblings-in-law, Lynn, June, Bobby, Eddie, and Sonja, all of whom he held dear.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Don continued a life of service in his community. He volunteered as a swim instructor for young children with disabilities at the local YMCA, offering his patience and kindness to those who needed it most. As an insurance agent, Don’s clients were more than policyholders—they were neighbors and friends, people he enjoyed getting to know and helping.
In New Fairfield, Don was nothing short of a local legend. Known for his active involvement as a Lion, a Little League coach, and even as Santa during the holidays, he left an impact on all who crossed his path. He had a particular love for umpiring, finding joy in calling a game and supporting young players on the field. Don was also a regular at the Goodie Shoppe, where he enjoyed simple moments with his friends over coffee and conversation.
But above all, Don’s greatest pride was in his family. As “Papa,” he treasured every moment with his grandchildren—Katie, Samantha, Brayden, Emery, Blake, Dylan, Brody, Brenna, and Casey. He was a loving father to Traci, Tricia, Karen, and his only son, Kevin. Don also supported his sons- and daughter-in-law, Chris, Meredith, and Jerry, with the same dedication he brought to everything in his life.
Though we feel his absence deeply, we honor Don’s legacy of kindness, humor, and quiet strength. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched, every story he told, and the love he shared with family and friends.
Don had a way of leaving every conversation with a simple, “Anyway,” a somewhat funny and quirky transition from one topic to the next. Today, with a smile on our faces and a tear in our eye, we say, “Anyway… goodbye… and we’ll miss you.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Tuesday October 29, 2024, at Saint Edward the Confessor Church, Brush Hill Rd., New Fairfield. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Monday, October 28, 2024, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
