Dorothy “Dot” was born in Syracuse, NY, on February 9, 1929, to Edith (Claver) and Edward Adams. She attended Syracuse schools, living in Syracuse and Baldwinsville where she started her family before relocating to Danbury in 1962. Dot was a long-time employee of Caldor in Brookfield and retired in 1994. Never one to sit idle, she returned to work at Stop & Shop in Ridgefield where she was a cherished member of the team, always with story and a smile for everyone.
A longtime resident of Danbury, Dot enjoyed bowling, TOPS club, bingo and spending time with her family. Dot was a staple at Danbury’s Rogers Park where she could always be found cheering on the many members of her softball-loving family. She enjoyed traveling, reading, trips to the casino, watching Jeopardy, playing cards, and a good word jumble.
Dot was matriarch to a large, close-knit family including 8 children, 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her family and was often seen sporting her treasured family charm necklaces or wearing one of her many “Grandma” sweatshirts. Dot raised her family on Robinson Avenue, before retiring to the Jensen Community on Kenosia Avenue, and most recently residing at Hancock Hall.
Dot is survived by her children: Sharon (Nils) Gyllensten, Doug (Rebecca) Jutton, Jim (Joyce) Jutton, Karen (Ray) Cantatore, Mary (Nick) Jimenez, Allison Shetz, and Pam (Matt) Baker. Grandma “Gram” Dot also leaves behind her much-loved grandchildren: Jennifer, Scott, Stacy, Brian, Amy, Josh, Erin, Kristi, Sheila, Kathy, Gary, Joey, Alyssa, Lindsey, Nick, Michelle, Michael and Jack and is pre-deceased by grandsons Matthew and Erik.
Dot is also pre-deceased by her husband William J. McCarthy, her former husband Norbert J. Jutton, brother Edward Adams, sister Corinne (Adams) Santos, sister Violet, twin sister Marion and quite recently her beloved son Billy (Kathi) McCarthy. She was a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews, and a beloved friend. Dot leaves behind a legacy of family, laughter and lots and lots of love.
A memorial gathering will take place on Thursday, March 29, 2018, from 4pm-7pm at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. A prayer service will start at 6:30pm.
Interment will be in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, at the convenience of the family.
