He lived in Danbury his entire life. Family, business and helping others were his life passions. After an honorable discharge from the U.S Army in 1953, Mr. Hawley embarked on a career that would lead him to be one of the most significant and respected entrepreneurs in the history of Danbury. He was a self-made man in every sense of the word. His roots as a farmer and a milkman lead to constructing over 150 homes in the Danbury area as he turned his eye toward commercial real estate development. His pride and joy was Berkshire Shopping Center along with many other area properties that totaled over one million square feet of buildings.
Ever involved with his community, Mr. Hawley served on the boards of directors of many area organizations including the Union Savings Bank, Danbury Hospital, the YMCA, Danbury Chamber of Commerce, Danbury Housing Partnership. He enjoyed being the honorary Chairman of the annual Ann Olson Golf Tournament where the winning team is awarded the “Hawley Cup”. He was proud of his affiliation with the Danbury Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow and hosted the annual summer picnic for many years. A philanthropist of the highest order he always helped charities when asked and was especially proud to have established the Ervie and Carolyn Hawley Endowed Chair at Danbury Hospital, which is currently occupied by his friend Dr. David Kramer.
He was a kind gentle man who loved his wife and children more than life. He was “Papa” to his 15 grandchildren who adored him. He was a role model to all. He was a soft-spoken man who always made his point. One of his favorite pastimes was simply having a cup of coffee with you and sharing his experiences and advice. He was a true family patriarch.
Mr. Hawley is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of 62 years, his children Gary (Cindy), Nancy Hamilton (Terry), Barbara Kiselak (John) and David (Nancy) and his grandchildren Karen Utter (Ken), Laura Mascolo (John), Matthew Hawley (fiancé Victoria), Meghan Hawley, Melissa Hawley, Susan Sergi (Ben), James Kiselak, Michael Kiselak, Daniel Kiselak, Joseph Kiselak, Elizabeth Hawley, Katie Hawley, Samantha Hawley, Bryan Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton, great-grandchildren Jack Mascolo and Ben Sergi and nephews Bill and Rick Conklin.
