Gary was born on November 3, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA where he sometimes spent his summers with family while growing up in Yonkers, New York until he made Danbury, CT his home in the early 1970's.
He worked in some of the hardest sectors of healthcare - working as a nurse in mental health, addiction and eldercare. His proudest work would likely be his time at the VA Hospital. Gary wanted so badly to serve his country but was held back by his physical limitations. He would go on to serve his community in various ways.
He was actively involved in the King Street Volunteer Fire Department, The Knights of Columbus, Camp Fire Girls and Boys, Saint Peter Church, Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut and Danbury’s local politics.
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathleen Davey Hathaway. He is survived by his son Stephen Hathaway and two daughters, Elizabeth Hathaway D’Auria and Kathleen Hathaway Kelly and their husbands who were like sons, Cyril D’Auria and Robert Kelly. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Louis John, Gabriel, Dante and Nolan. Gary is part of a large family and is survived by his brothers and sisters, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Manchester Rehabilitation, the firefighters and ambulance crew from Manchester and the ER staff at Hartford Hospital that fought to bring him back long enough for us to say goodbye to him as he wished. Your care and compassion for our dad and us means so much.
The family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Sunday, December 3, 2023 from 5pm to 8pm.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00am on Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Green Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Saint Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Ave. Ext., Danbury.
