Hans Bernhard Jackel, 80, of New Fairfield, CT died on April 4, 2015. He was the son of Bernhard and Erika Jackel and the husband of Waltraud Jackel. Hans was born on March 26, 1935 in Bremerhaven, Germany where he learned the cabinet making craft as a young man. He immigrated to the United States with his wife and infant son, Bernd, in 1962 eventually opening his own cabinet business, Brewster Custom Woodworking. Later he sold the business and became a cabinet maker for Heggerty Millwork in Mt. Kisco, NY. He was a member of the Westchester Carpenter's Union, Local 279. When he retired he traveled extensively throughout the country with his wife in their little Rialta camper.
He was predeceased by his youngest son William Jackel. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is also survived by a sister Monika and her husband Justus Wulfes of Surheide, Germany, a son, Bernd Jackel of Sherman, CT and a daughter Susanne (Jackel) Banks Istvan of Harwinton, CT. He had five grandchildren, Amanda Jackel, Chris Jackel, Brad Banks, Jessica (Banks) Rywolt, Joseph Istvan, III and five great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews both here and in Germany. Hans was well-known as a tough German with a great sense of humor and his love of hunting, fishing, camping and superior wood craftsmanship.
Calling Hours will be from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Green Funeral Home on Main Street, Danbury, CT, followed by a memorial service. A private burial will be held at a later date.
