Harold was born on June 15, 1927, in Stamford, Connecticut to Harold and Bertha Sleeper Gantnier. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1945 and served in the US Navy during WWII. Harold was a self-employed contractor who used heavy equipment to develop properties and build houses.
In the 1980’s Harold and his wife Evelyn relocated to the North Georgia mountains. After frequent visits, they fell in love with the area’s natural beauty. Together, they shared many adventures and cherished their community and friends.
Harold enjoyed collecting and tinkering with vintage cars, working in the yard, and was a colorful story teller about the family farm in Maine. He was an avid golfer and loved playing cards.
Harold will be deeply missed by his daughter Jacqui Gantnier, stepdaughters Susan Gawel, Gay Anne Cook, and Donna and Carol Retallick, his grandchildren Travis Lewis, Jason Retallick, Lindsay Sears, Frank Gawel Ashley Stebbins and Cheryl Gawel, seven great grand-children, and his family of friends at Mary’s Southern Grill, Young Harris, GA. Harold was predeceased by his son Richard Gantnier, two sisters Margaret Vinet and Patricia Scisco, and two brothers Felix and Vernon Gantnier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Saturday January 5th, 2019 at Saint Joseph Church, Danbury. Interment with military honors will follow in the Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
