Herbie was born in Cavan, Ireland, a son of the late William and Elizabeth Irwin. Born into a large Irish family, he was the first child in his family to be born in a hospital. While in Ireland he attended school up until the 8th grade and then began working on local farms in Ireland.
Herbie immigrated to the United States on March 16, 1971, and settled in Woodside, NY, where some of his siblings and cousins were already established. Not soon after, he started to work in construction and because of his hard work climbed up the ranks to become a Superintendent. Working for large firms including Crow, Taylor Woodrow and HRH. Some of the projects he worked on include the Union Carbide building, the Liberty Science Center and the clubhouse at Trump National Golf Club Westchester.
Herbie loved watching baseball. He enjoyed working around the house and was able to fix almost anything.
Herb was predeceased by his brother, Bill; and sisters: Kathleen and Mary.
In addition to his wife of 43 years, he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth; his two sons: Steven and Gregory; his grandchildren: Colin, Eva, James, Charlotte, Ruby, Patrick and Riley. Also surviving are his siblings: James, Samuel, Thomas, John, David, Charlotte, Ann, and Meta.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00am on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Congregational Church of New Fairfield, 20 Gillotti Rd., New Fairfield, CT. Interment will follow in Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington, NY.
Friends will be received from 4:00pm - 8:00pm on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Green Funeral Home., 57 Main ST., Danbury, CT.
