Leonel was born in Nabais Portugal on April 1st, 1946. He was a master carpenter by trade and worked in restoring many national treasures in his home country. In his youth, Leonel briefly played professional soccer before being recruited into the service and serving in Angola.
Leonel was married to Felisbela (Bela/Maria) on February 14, 1966; they were married for 54 years.
He immigrated to the United States in March of 1982 with his wife and three young daughters and settled in Danbury, CT. Leonel worked as a laborer for many years until he retired in 1998 due to health issues. He enjoyed gardening and he was an avid soccer fan so he never missed any of his beloved Benfica games.
Leonel is survived by his beloved wife, Felisbela, his three daughters, Clara, Estela and Vera, his adoring grandchildren, Nicole, Michael, Isabella, Lilliana and Luke, his son-in-law John, his sister Clara and many nieces and nephews and last but not least, his aide Maria, who was like a daughter to him.
Leonel is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio Bernardo Nunes da Cunha and Preciosa de Almeida, and his siblings Flora, Inocencia, Estela, Avelino, Claudio and Antonio.
Due to the Covid pandemic, services for Leonel will be held privately.
