Mary Betz Sweeney-Lane passed away peacefully on October 8, 2020. She was born on Feb. 25,1932 and lived in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, the second child and daughter of the late Mary O’Conner and Andrew Betz. Mary had a close relationship with her late brother, John Betz, and his wife Ann. After graduating from High School in Phillipsburg, Mary began working as a switchboard operator and married her late husband Frank Sweeney in 1953.They resided in Phillipsburg until 1963 when they moved to Lexington, Kentucky along with their four children: Michael, Rosemary, Kathe and Sean.
In Lexington, Mary worked for the Southern Bell telephone company and, ultimately, would work at SNET in Connecticut after moving with Frank and her four children to New Milford in 1971. After losing her first husband in 1972, Mary raised her children as a single mother while continuing to work full time at SNET. During the final years of her career, Mary worked at New Milford Bank and Trust and happily met the second Francis of her life, Francis Lane. She would go on to marry Francis in 1999; then, move to Port St. Lucie, Florida in 2003 for their retirement.
Mary enjoyed watching college basketball, both the men and women who played on the Kentucky Wildcats and UCONN Huskies. She also enjoyed dancing, spending time at the beach, listening to music, and keeping up with her thirteen grandchildren.
For all those who knew Mary, they found a devoted friend, loving mother, mother in law , and proud aunt and grandmother.
A service will be held in her memory on October 23, 2020 at noon at St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford, CT.
