Mary Elizabeth Schlichtig

Mary was born on December 2, 1937 in Yonkers, NY to Neil and Elizabeth McCaffery of Glasgow, Scotland. A graduate of St. Barnabas High School and Grace Business School, she worked as a secretary for W.R. Grace until she married the late William J. Schlichtig on September 2, 1961. Mary and Bill moved to “the sticks” of Danbury, CT in 1964 where Mary resided in the family home until 2022. After staying at home raising their four children, she returned to the workforce in 1993 working as a tax preparer for H&R Block. In 1997, Mary began what would become a 25 year career as the bookkeeper at her home-away-from-home, St. Peter Church in Danbury.

Mary is survived by and will be deeply missed by her daughter Eileen Schlichtig, her sons William Schlichtig, Jr. (Carolyn) and Robert Schlichtig, and her daughter-in-law Betsy Schlichtig. Mary leaves her loving grandchildren Michael Schlichtig and fiancé Samantha Austin, William, Meghan and Matthew Schlichtig; sisters-in-law Siegrun McCaffery, Olga McCaffery, and Mary Anne Ringwald; and her friend of over 80 years, Patricia Carlson, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her son James Schlichtig and her brothers Edward McCaffery and James McCaffery.

The family will receive guests at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT on Thursday, October 30, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, 104 Main St., Danbury, on Friday, October 31 at 1:00 pm. Interment to follow at St. Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Ave. Ext., Danbury.

The family wishes to thank the employees of Maplewood Senior Living in Newtown and Regional Hospice of Danbury for the wonderful care they offered Mary over the last 9 months.
