

Sheila was born on St Valentine’s Day in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. Raised in Ireland, she lived in England and Canada before settling with her family in Newtown CT.
She was the daughter of the late William and Nora (Leary) Courtney. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Richard, her brothers Daniel, Matthew, Cornelius and sisters Bridget (Sister Antoinette Courtney) and Nora.
She is survived by her six children Michael, Maureen (Robert) Tremarzo, Sheila Mapes, Patricia (Arlindo) Fonseca, Sean (Patricia) and Terence (Trish); eleven grandchildren Courtney (Palo) Onofer, Kevin Tremarzo, Michael and Allison Mapes, Morgan and John Fonseca, Rich (Tina) Shanahan, Haley (Mike) Mozonski, Connor, Casey and Craig Shanahan; and two great grandchildren Olivia and Margaret Onofer. She was also preceded in death by son in law Robert Mapes.
A devoted wife and loving mother, Mom will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her tireless work ethic. From the Sunday breakfasts after church to the large Sunday and holiday dinners, Mom was happiest when she had a full house to feed.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Glen Hill Center for their gentle and compassionate care of our Mom.
There were no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on December 7, 2017 at St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown. Burial followed at St Rose Cemetery in Sandy Hook.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to St Rose Church, Parish Outreach Ministry.
