Bill was born on February 13, 1926, in the Inwood section of Manhattan. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and graduated with a BA degree from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, in 1947. That same year, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Farrell, on December 27, the day after a record-breaking snowfall brought the Northeast to a standstill. They were married for 61 years. After college Bill completed one year at Fordham Law School but left for a position at Royal Typewriter, which jumpstarted a lifelong career in sales and marketing, a natural outlet for Bill’s outgoing, competitive personality. Bill was extremely hard working and traveled extensively for business across the United States, as well as Europe, Japan, and Russia. He worked until age 84.
Bill was a natural ham and loved singing, and was known for his quick wit and infectious smile. He stayed physically active for a long time, following his grandchildren through the indoor mazes at the old Discovery Zone and running 5 and 10Ks until almost age 80. He had a passion for sports, especially his teams the NY Giants (football) and NY Yankees, and before they left New York, the NY Giants (baseball), and for history and reading. Bill was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Danbury, where he served as a lector for years and a men’s club member. He was appointed to the Board of Directors for HART and served on the Board of Directors for Shelter of the Cross (Renewal House).
Bill is survived by his five children: Eileen (Kevin) McMullin, Maureen (Michael) Garry, Colleen (Gary) Velez, Bill (Laura Lee) Goldstein, and Katie (Todd) Gallagher Appell; four grandchildren: Emma (Charlie) McGarvie, Ryley (Jacqui) Gallagher, Sean McMullin, and Ethan Garry; and seven great-grandchildren: Brady, Aiden, Caleb, Oliver, Evelyn, Keira, and Elaina. He is also survived by brother James (Lafaye Cobb) Goldstein as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by wife, Charlotte; his parents, Eleanor and Louis Goldstein; one sister, Sr. Marie (Louis) Goldstein, RSHM, and brothers Robert and Arthur Goldstein.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at St. Peter Church, 104 Main Street, Danbury, followed by burial at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Copps Hill Rd., Ridgefield.
