James Sylvia, age 99 of Dartmouth passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2019 in Hathaway Manor. He was the husband of the late Mary C. (Fernandes) Sylvia with whom they shared 68 loving years together.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Correia) Sylvia. He attended Bentley University where he studied accounting and finance. He received his certification in 1962 as a Certified Public Accountant. James served in the Army as a Master Sergeant, was an avid sports fan and followed politics. He loved his family but enjoyed being a Grandfather to his beautiful granddaughter Brooke, his pride and joy. He will be deeply missed by all.
He is survived by a son, Robert J. Sylvia and his wife Karen of Dartmouth; a granddaughter, Brooke and her fiancé Anthony J. Gomes of New Bedford; two nieces, Linda Methia and her husband Richard of Shrewsbury, Diana Shumway of Northboro, and many other nieces. James was predeceased by his brothers, Ernest, John and Arthur Sylvia and his sister Lena.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 9:00am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. His visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 from 5:00-7:00pm in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth.
