Barbara Diane Dares-Godley

She was predeceased by her parents, George Victor (Vic) and Mary Kathleen (Kay) Dares, siblings Ronnie Dares and Corinne Earle, and her husband, Denis Godley.

She is survived by her much loved sons, Martin McLennaghan and Paul McLennaghan (Amani), daughter Diane McIntosh (Stuart), grandchildren Robert, Sarah, Shannon, Cameron, Simon and Malcom, step-children John, Mary, Pam, Anne and Jane Godley, and sister-in-law, Judy Dares (nee LeClair).

Barbara graduated from Halifax Ladies College and obtained her teacher’s qualifications at the Nova Scotia Teachers College. She worked as a teacher and guidance counselor in school districts across Nova Scotia. She was a life-long learner, obtaining two bachelors degrees (Arts and Education), a Masters in Educational Psychology and a Masters in Counselling at St Mary’s, Mt. St. Vincent and Acadia Universities.

Our mother loved the beach, long walks and drives and traveling the world. She was a life-long diarist, journaling her thoughts, feelings and experiences with beautiful penmanship that, sadly, none of her children inherited.

More than anything, our mother loved her children, grandchildren and extended family and her dear friends. She was a great friend, always remembering important dates (she had the most incredible memory!) and loved nothing more than to share stories, binge watch anything (especially mysteries), and laugh.

The stories she told us when we were young, during those endless drives in a hot car, cemented our knowledge that she loved each of us deeply. Of course, her love was expressed in her final words to us.

A service celebrating Barbara’s beautiful and full life will be held on August 28th at 1pm at Christ Church in Dartmouth, with a reception to follow in the church hall.
