Christopher Ian Martinello, a passionate sailor, beloved brother, uncle and true friend to many, left us unexpectedly on May 23rd, 2024. Born in 1956 to Sandra and Victor Martinello in Sydney Nova Scotia, Chris was the 3rd youngest of eight siblings.
Chris found solace on the open waters, his passion for sailing leading him to the Shearwater Yacht Club – a second home where he shared laughter, enjoyed a rum, and swapped stories with fellow sailors. His unwavering work ethic shone through in every role he undertook, from crewing on the Bluenose, to working in the fishing industry in Papua New Guinea. Volunteering at the Yacht club further demonstrated his dedication. Chris also spent his free time navigating the Halifax Harbour with family and friends, all while being a voracious reader. His legendary storytelling skills and playful terms of endearment, like “bonehead ” and “meathead”, brought smiles to those around him. We think it was his way of ensuring no one felt superior; in that regard, he was a great equalizer.
Chris also stood up for what he believed in, excelling at colorful language (especially behind the wheel) and never hesitating to call out nonsense. His humor, often laced with a touch of irreverence, leveled the playing field, reminding us that we’re all human, flaws and all.
Chris is survived by and will be forever missed by his siblings—Eric, Debbie, Glen (Cindy), Dana (Brett), and Ann (Carm). He adored his nephews and nieces, weaving them into his adventures whenever possible. Bill, Jennifer, Novella, Brian, Nicholas, Megan, Melissa, Robert, Jamie, and Johnny—all held a special place in his heart. He was also proud and loved teasing his grand nephews and nieces of which there are nine & one of the way.
Chris had an uncanny ability to forge deep connections, and his close friends, too numerous to name, mourn his passing. Their shared memories will keep his spirit alive.
To honor Chris, a Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024, from 6 to 8 pm at the Shearwater Yacht Club (10 Avenger Place, Dartmouth, NS). Let’s gather, reminisce, and share stories-the way Chris would have wanted to be remembered.
In memory of Chris, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice.
