JOHNSTON, David Douglas “Doug” - 83, of Dartmouth died on May 18 at Dartmouth General Hospital. Doug was born in St John's Newfoundland to Muriel Isabel McKenzie and Dr. David Cecil Johnston. Dr Johnston was inducted into the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame. Doug's dad David died when he was 2 and Muriel brought her 2 year old son back to live with maiden Aunt Isa in the big white family house in Pictou. Doug attended Pictou Academy where he met the love of his life, his future wife Dott. Doug graduated from Acadia University and NS Technical College to become a professional Civil Engineer. After 6 years with Bell Canada, Doug and Dott brought their young family back home to Nova Scotia to begin a career with Maritime Tel and Tel. After 27 years with MT&T Doug retired. Doug was an avid woodworker, making anything from toys for the kids to furniture. Doug enjoyed the outdoors, going for adventures in the bush with his Argo and was fondly referred to as “Wild Man Johnston” by his family. In 2015 Doug moved to Parkland at the Lakes where he made many new friends. While there he always carried a joke book so that he could share a laugh with friends. "Everybody needs a laugh". He is survived by his daughters Jane Trider (Mike Brien) of Dartmouth, and Thelma Kessel (Christoph Kessel) of Guelph, his cherished grandchildren Alan Trider (Michelle McNaughton)Dartmouth, Kevin Trider, Yellowknife, Nicholas Kessel (Megan Willoughby Kessel) Cambridge, Grace Kessel, Stratford, Laura Kessel, Guelph, his Great Grandchildren Nolan and Emmy McNaughton Trider, Dartmouth. Predeceased in 1993 by his beloved wife Dott (nee Dorothy Kathleen Jewers) of Pictou. Doug enjoyed seeing all of his family in the weeks prior to his passing. Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, June 10, in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street. Donations may be made to Feed Nova Scotia, The Red Cross or a Charity of Choice.
