Doreen Blois spent the first 20 years of her life in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, before setting out on a new adventure that would take her to Ottawa, Ontario. From an early age, Doreen knew she wanted to see more of the world beyond her hometown. With her characteristic independence and determination, she once described her earliest ambitions as "to not marry a farmer and get out of Shubenacadie."
What began as the pursuit of a career became a remarkable 50 year chapter of her life in Ottawa, filled with meaningful friendships, cherished memories, and professional accomplishments.
Throughout her career, Doreen was known for her dedication, hard work, and no non sense approach. She spent nearly 25 years working in Multiculturalism and Heritage Canada, where she concluded her career as Finance Director. Along the way, she also had the opportunity to contribute to special projects, including work associated with the Olympics.
Among her proudest professional achievements were receiving the Governor General's 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal and recognition through a Canadian Heritage People's Management Award. These honours reflected the dedication she brought to her work and the contributions she made throughout her career.
Doreen was predeceased by her loving parents, Ken and Veda (Leighton) Blois; her brother, Glendon Blois; and her niece, Trisha Blois.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Blythe Blois; her cherished grandchildren, Dorian Blois and Parker Coakley; and Troy, Taya and Taylor Matthews, who also held a special place in her heart. She is also remembered by her stepmother, Wilma Blois; her brothers, Vernon Blois (Nancy) and Perry Blois; her sister-in-law, Linda Blois (wife of the late Glendon Blois); her nieces and nephews, Laurie Blois, Jeff Blois, Darren Blois, Shawna Young, and Jodi Blois; and her great-niece, Holly, with whom she shared a special and loving bond.
Dorian and Parker affectionately called her "Grammie," a name that reflected the special place she held in their hearts and the love she shared with them.
While Doreen enjoyed a fulfilling and successful career, it was the love she gave and received that truly defined her life. Family meant so much to her, especially her daughter Blythe, her grandchildren, and Laurie, with whom she shared an exceptionally close and loving bond.
When asked about her proudest family moments, Doreen spoke of Blythe and Laurie, their friendship, their love, and their caring nature. These were the things that brought her the greatest pride and happiness. Her close bond with Laurie, the love she shared with Holly, and the joy she found in her grandchildren were all meaningful parts of her life.
Doreen was also blessed with a wonderful circle of girlfriends who became an important part of her life in Ottawa. Marion, Yvonne, Françoise, Susan, and Barb shared more than 30 years of friendship with her, creating countless memories, sharing laughter, and being there for one another through life's many chapters. These treasured friendships were a testament to the lasting connections Doreen made throughout her life.
Doreen lived a life filled with love, generosity, friendship, and devotion to those she held dear. Her kindness and the special relationships she nurtured will remain a lasting part of her legacy.
Doreen's life motto was to live without guilt, to make the decisions in life that would leave you with no regrets or feelings of guilt. It was a philosophy she held close to her heart, a reminder to live thoughtfully, follow what you believe is right, and find peace in the choices you make.
Although she will be deeply missed, the love she shared, the memories she created, and the lives she touched will never be forgotten. Her stories, accomplishments, favourite things, and special memories will continue to be remembered and cherished by generations to come.
She will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 11:00 am.
