Age 86, of Dartmouth. It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Edna, who died peacefully at home. It was a very short and courageous fight with cancer that took her down swinging. Edna is survived by her sons Peter [ Betty] Steven, and Shane. Her grandchildren Daniel and Melissa. Daughter in-law Sandy [ Steven ] children Brandy and Kyle. She was pre-deceased by her husband Jack, son Mark and, sister Shelia. Born in Regina Saskatchewan on April 30th, 1929. Raised on the prairies during the depression and moved to Trenton Ontario during World War II. It was after the war that she met her husband and married in Saint John New Brunswick. Together they moved to Pictou and her husband went to sea with the Dept. of Transport. In the late fifties her last move was to Dartmouth. This is where she raised four boys and became a widow in 1970. It was at this time that Edna started a long and fulfilling career with The Canadian Merchant Service Guild retiring in 1994. It was during this time Edna became active in volunteering with the Cole Harbour Belayr Hockey Association , Dartmouth Crusaders Swim Club, Swim Nova Scotia and finally her calling was the Mission to Seafarers. This is where she volunteered her time spending countless hours behind the counter serving drinks and counselling wayward seafarers. Edna also ran the annual Christmas Shoe Box Program for what it seems like forever at the Mission.
Edna found joy in many aspects of life; her love for animals-especially dogs, she loved to swim, travelling, getting dressed up for social events, cooking dinners for her family, enjoying a good laugh and just enjoying what life had to offer.
She has opened her home to many people over the years, always able to carry on a good conversation with her many friends and was never shy to speak her mind.
Edna will be remembered for her honesty, generosity and witty personality.
We would like to thank the VON and the palliative home care team for all their help in the last few weeks. There will be a visitation on June 4 at A.L.
