It is with immense sadness that the family of Gary Wayne Geddes, 79, shares his passing on July 11, 2025. Gary fought a long hard battle with cancer and came to rest at the VG Hospital with his beloved wife and stepdaughter by his side. Gary was born on September 10, 1945 in Halifax to the late Eldon and Jean (Banks) Geddes.
Gary had many passions in his life. Paddling started when he was about 12 years of age at the Mic Mac Boat Club and he continued on to become a lifelong member. He played hockey for Dalhousie University and various other leagues in Dartmouth. His nickname was "Grease" because he was very agile especially in the corners. Karate was a huge part of his life. Gary dedicated over 55 years to practicing Uechi-Ryu. He was a 9th degree blackbelt and a member of the International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation.
Travelling took Gary on many adventures throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean. Some of his most memorable experiences while he was away included riding the Marrakesh Express in Morocco, visiting the town of "Geddes" in Scotland and keeping warm during the winter with his beloved wife (Patty) in Punta Cana. Later in life Gary enjoyed getting together with the Dartmouth Hometown Boys (childhood friends) to shoot the shit and catch up with a cold one.
Gary graduated from Dartmouth High School and then went on to further his education at Dalhousie University where he earned his bachelor of Science in Psychology.
During his lifetime he threw his hat into the ring with many professions. Gary was well known for being a professional photographer capturing memories at weddings, sports events and family portraits. Some of his other careers included driving a cab, home inspections, being a landlord and designing employee recognition jewelry and awards for many companies including the Halifax Regional Police and the Halifax Mooseheads.
Gary is survived by his wife, Patty Harpell; stepson, Stephen (Katherine) Creaser; stepdaughter, Kristy Creaser; step grandchildren, Benjamin and Madeleine Creaser; sister in law, Dianne Geddes; nephews, Bradley and Robert Geddes and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Eldon Geddes; mother, Jean (Banks) Geddes; brother, James Geddes and best friend Ted Lahey.
Gary had great love and loyalty for his family and friends. He took great pleasure in expressing this through cooking and baking elaborate meals and desserts while hosting get togethers and family events. He also kept everyone on their toes with his quick witted one of a kind sense of humor that often caught them off guard.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Gary on Sunday, August 10, 2025 from 2-4pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 2234 Rocky Lake Drive, Waverley, NS. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife or a local animal rescue of your choice.
