John Allan Lloyd Brownrigg

John left us all with heavy hearts on January 15, 2021. Born June 28, 1935 in Winnipeg, MB, oldest child of the late Augustin Brownrigg and Phyllis Chambers. John joined the Navy January 1953 at 17 years old and began a long career in the Naval Meteorological Branch. John served on the cruiser HMCS Quebec, aircraft carriers HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure, destroyer HMCS Assiniboine, and Tribal-class HMCS Huron. He also served at Shearwater Fleet School Stadacona, Marcom HQ, and finally at NDHQ Ottawa at the Directorate of Meteorology where he retired spring 1984. John took a navy break 1963-1967 serving as VP and Director of Seaside Real Estate Ltd. He was also a two time First VP of Dartmouth Kinsman, member of Naval Air Group, Atlantic Chiefs and POS Association and member of Centennial Branch Royal Canadian Legion. John was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Lorraine Elizabeth (Paterson) nee Riley of Newport Station and Dartmouth. John is survived by brothers, James (Victoria, BC), Ted (Ontario) and Dave (Winnipeg, MB) and their families; sister-in-laws, Marleen Starratt and Eileen Saunders of Dartmouth, Phil and Lesley Pynn and daughters, Jessie and Leah of Halifax; friend, Carol Pipes of Dartmouth and many wonderful friends and neighbours. John has been cremated, there will be no service as per his wishes, John’s cremated remains will be dedicated to the sea. Thank you to all of his support crew these past years, including Drs. Champion, Zaman, Wood, Rendon, Ball and Amos, palliative nurse Nick Fraughton, Home Instead Home Care, VON’s, and Halifax Hospice. John had a kind, giving, loving heart and helped many in this world. I sit in my walker, is my sun down nigh?

I feel like a young kid, happy, but not high

Friends and loved ones, stop to talk

To laugh and share a beer

I raise myself and strive to walk

My heart so full of cheer

And if it is my time here

Or even “oh so near"

I know that i still walk the earth

Of death I have no fear

For life was good most of the time

‘cept for the loss of Lorraine

And all my friends with caring hearts

Have helped to salve the pain

So thank you all for the love

Friends you always will be

I am off to see Lorraine

She is waiting for me
