John (Jack) Arthur Hurst, born August 10, 1935 at the Grace Maternity Hospital. Therefore, like a lot of other unfortunate Nova Scotians, began life stuck with Halifax instead of Dartmouth, on their birth certificates. He passed away June 11 after a courageous battle with cancer. Son of Arthur K. Hurst of Canso and Edith (Graham) of Dartmouth. Since 1961, he was happily married with Birgit “Biggy” Maria (Frey) of Cornerbrook, NL. Their two sons Stephen K. and Gregory P. live in Nova Scotia. He was educated in the Dartmouth school system at Victoria, Notting Park (both Wyse Road), Park (School St.) and Dartmouth High. John was a retired CMA accountant with additional sponsored studies at Dalhousie University including statistical mathematics and computer programming. John was baptized in the old Hester St. Stairs Memorial United Church and was an active Cub and Scout at the Emmanuel Anglican Church in north Dartmouth. He enjoyed playing baseball at Victoria Park and at the D.A. grounds. Jack was a past member of Banook Canoe Club, St. George’s Tennis Club, Bedford Basin Yacht Club and Hartlen Point Golf Club. After eleven years, he resigned from Imperial Oil Ltd., rather than move with the Halifax Marketing Dept. to Toronto. He was the accountant for Harris and Roome Ltd. and related companies; was promoted to Treasurer and board member of Maritime Accessories Limited. He had a three year mandate as Controller and signing officer of the international Clairtone Sound Corp. group of companies during final restructuring and termination of operations. Later, as Controller of W.H. Schwartz and Sons Ltd. he preferred being Lakeside plant accountant rather than be part of the executive group move to Quebec. He became the International Purchasing Manager in Halifax for the revised Schwartz Inc. company. When Schwartz Inc. was sold to Dalton Foods, Jack was contracted by Dalton’s for eight months as Toronto resident consultant for production accounting, factory budgeting and purchasing. After returning to Dartmouth, he was Accountant for Cansov Marine Products, a partnership of U.S.S.R. (Sovrybflot), British (Marr Seafoods), and Canadian interests. He accepted a position with Marr Seafoods Ltd. to include various fish marketing duties. Jack also did forensic accounting and other duties in the transportation industry before retiring. Funeral service will be held Monday, June 17th at 1pm in Stairs Memorial United Church on Hester St., Dartmouth.Special thank you to the Palliative care and VON.
