

Marie was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was the second of two daughters born to Karl and Monica (Kennedy) Vaagen. Marie grew up in Dartmouth attending St Paul’s, Bicentennial, and Dartmouth High School. She subsequently earned her BSc( Dalhousie) and BEd and MEd ( SMU).
Marie was first and foremost an aunt, great aunt, godmother, and a life-long friend. Marie’s caring nature led her to become a teacher. She taught mathematics at Saint Patrick’s High School and was Department Head during her time there. She also taught at Halifax West High School.
She loved sports, especially the Montreal Canadians. She shared this love with her family and friends, many of whom would tell you today that the Canadians are their team. Marie’s other love was animals and especially her precious cats, Ayden and Kjell. She shared her home and heart with them.
Marie is survived by her brother-in-law Herbert Malle, her two nieces Sonja and Stacy, three grandnephews and one grandniece. Her elder niece in Cole Harbour, Sonja, husband John and their son Orin and daughter Zita; younger niece Stacy in Sweden, husband Ulf and their sons Karl and Viktor. She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Sonja Malle.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Metro SPCA and Hospice Halifax.
A memorial service will be held at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, located at 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS on Monday, September 29 at 11:00 am.
