Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mervyn was the younger son of the late Reuben and Emma (Hartling) George. He grew up in Bedford and later moved to Dartmouth. He was active in Bedford Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Dartmouth during his youth. His faith remained an important part of his life, and he was involved in many Protestant churches over the years.
Mervyn apprenticed as a marine draughtsman and worked in the field in Dartmouth, Halifax, Liverpool, Pictou, and Cape Breton. His true passion, however, was music. Raised in a musical family who were involved in the performing arts, Mervyn's natural talents in singing and playing the piano were nurtured from an early age. He sang in numerous church choirs and quartets, served as a paid church soloist, accompanist, and director. He played in dance bands, performed in musical theatre, and composed both secular and sacred music.
Mervyn eventually transformed his musical pursuits into full-time employment, establishing a piano tuning business and becoming an acclaimed dining and dance music entertainer. His organ playing and vocal stylings graced some of the finest hotel restaurants and lounges of the day.
Mervyn was predeceased by his parents, Reuben and Emma (Hartling) George; his first wife, Marilyn (Doty) George; his stepson, Shane O'Leary; and his step-grandson, Davin Moxsom. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie George; his brother, Glendon George (Betty); his niece, Linda George-Wegner (Steffan); his nephew, David George (Sherry); grandnephews Kurtis George-Wegner and Ian George; and grandniece Kaelin George-Wegner. He is also survived by daughters Glenna Gallant and Carolyn George; grandchildren Gerry, Rachael, and Tyler; 14 step-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren.
Mervyn's work, music, and faith were central to his life, and he generously shared his talents with the communities around him. Through his music and service, he brought enjoyment to many and will be remembered for his meaningful contributions and commitment to his faith.
