Mike retired 13 years ago from a career as a Plumber by trade with DND. He worked with Jim Emslie, Gerry Samson, Paul Sampson and Roy Brown to name a few. After he retired, he spent his time golfing, which was his passion. Mike was a member of the Brookfield Golf & Country Club - he loved the staff there (Lexi went above and beyond) and golfed with his buddy “brother Leon”.
Mike had a wonderful life and so many friends. Floyd Donovan is one to mention as they both leaned on each other over the years. Mike cared about people, talked your ear off, and was quite opinionated … at times. He had the biggest heart for nature and fed the birds - watched the pheasants, deer, and all that came through the backyard. Mike had a passion for music and played the bass guitar.
Mike shared Kathy’s passion for gardening – growing fresh herbs, garlic, and vegetables for the meals they loved to prepare together. Mike loved to be a part of Les Marmitons in Halifax where he cooked with a team who shared the same passion for fine food, wine and culinary arts.
Margot, Ralph and Scott are overwhelmed. They stuck by Mike through all the hard times and had many laughs over the years – he will be fondly remembered. Ralph and Mike were “brothers” to the heart.
Mike was very fond of Kathy’s boys – Taylor, Landon, and Nolan. He said that if he had a son of his own, he would choose any one of them. He loved his grandchildren – Lily, Noah, and Oliver (Ollie) who called him Papa.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Kathy Dawn McShane, sisters in law Margot Meyers (Ralph), Jackie Bigelow, and brother-in-law Stephen Bigelow. Uncle to Scott, Ashley, Alysa and Stephen. Kathy’s family – brother - Stephen (Charlotte), children - Taylor (Sonia), Landon (Carleen), Nolan (Alanna), grandchildren Lily, Noah, and Oliver. Mother-in-law Marilyn McShane - Mike was always there for her no matter what. Mike was predeceased by his first wife, Darlene Ann Bernard, Parents Geraldine and Alex Bernard, Grandparents Agnes Nelligan and Roy Keddy.
Cremation has taken place. At the request of Mike, no service will be provided. In lieu of flowers, please donate either to his late wife’s bursary (Darlene Ann Bigelow Memorial Bursaries) at Saint Thomas University, NB (www.stu.ca) or Hope for Wildlife (phone/text 902-407-9453). We would like to thank the staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital and Centennial Building in Halifax for their compassionate care for Mike.
“Mike’s message to everyone ~ enjoy life and hug your loved ones”.
